The Chess World Cup will get underway in Goa on November 1. The knockout tournament featuring most of the world’s top players will conclude on November 26, or a day earlier, if the final is decided without the tiebreakers.

This is the second time India is hosting the prestigious event; the first one was in 2002 in Hyderabad, where Viswanathan Anand became the champion. Last month, Divya Deshmukh had won the women’s World Cup after beating Koneru Humpy in an all-India final in Georgia.

As the host, India should be hoping  to make it a double. In players like World champion D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi, India has some strong contenders.

“After the success of the women’s World Cup held in Georgia earlier this year, we are proud to bring the FIDE World Cup to Goa,” the world chess governing body’s president Arkady Dvorkovich said. “It will be a celebration of chess, and a unique experience for players and spectators from around the world. The representatives of 90 plus countries are expected to take part.”

The top three from the World Cup will become eligible to play at Candidates tournament, the qualifier for the World championship.
