To modernise urban livelihoods, the Andhra Pradesh government has approved the establishment of Smart Street Vending Markets across seven major cities — Anantapur, Kurnool, Tadepalli-Mangalagiri, Ongole, Srikakulam, Vijayawada and Kadapa.
Implemented through MEPMA under the DAY-NULM (Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihood Mission) Support to Urban Street Vendors (SUSV) scheme, the initiative will provide organised, technology-driven, and eco-friendly vending spaces for 580 vendors. Each market will house 40 to 200 modular shops equipped with solar power, free Wi-Fi, digital payment facilities, and CCTV surveillance. The project, with an estimated cost of ₹26 crore, will be funded through a blended model of SHG bank loans, MEPMA support, and government contributions.
Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar said the project aims to “ensure dignity for vendors, convenience for customers, and orderliness for cities.” Priority will be given to women, differently-abled, and marginalised vendors, with allotments made transparently through the Town Vending Committees.
Beyond infrastructure, the programme includes skill training in hygiene, food safety, and entrepreneurship, as well as support for digital marketing and tie-ups with e-commerce platforms. Mr. Suresh Kumar said the initiative will empower nearly 2,500 dependents, promote sustainable practices, and create new revenue streams for municipalities.
