An inter-caste marriage was solemnised at the office of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) at Thiruthuraipoondi on Vinayaka Chathurthi day on Wednesday (August 27, 2025).

According to the police, the bride, Amirtha of Varambiyam near Thithuraipoondi in Tiruvarur district, a postgraduate degree-holder, had been in a relationship with the groom, Sanjaykumar of Maathur in Pudukottai, for the past seven years. Mr. Sanjaykumar has an undergraduate degree in business administration, and was working at a private company in Tiruchi.

The couple did not belong to the same community, but their parents agreed to conduct their wedding at a prominent Hindu temple in Tiruvarur district on August 27. The invitations were printed, and relatives of the bride and groom were invited.

However, Mr. Sanjaykumar’s uncle, who had objected to their union, reportedly kidnapped him to prevent the wedding. Subsequently, a complaint was lodged with the Thiruthuraipoondi police, seeking their help to trace and rescue Mr. Sanjaykumar.

He was rescued by the police and brought to the Thiruthuraipoondi police station on Vinayaka Chathurthi day, and later that evening, the couple’s wedding was held at the CPI(M) office at Thiruthuraipoondi.

The marriage was solemnised by the party’s State Committee member I.V. Nagarajan in the presence of party’s Tiruvarur District Secretary T. Murugaiyan, according to party State secretary P. Shanmugam’s post on X.

Further, a petition seeking protection for the couple was submitted by the party to the Thiruthuraipoondi police.
