The Delhi government on Thursday announced a ₹170-crore programme to transform 15 government Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) into “technology-rich Centres of Excellence”, in line with the Centre’s ₹60,000 crore National Scheme for ITI Upgradation.
Cabinet Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa made the announcement at the Regional Conference of Skill Ministers, hosted by the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship in Chandigarh. “The initiative to upgrade Delhi’s ITIs will equip the youth with 21st century skills, so that they graduate as job creators and not just job seekers,” he said.
The ITI Pusa (Central Delhi), ITI Shahdara (East Delhi) and ITI Mangolpuri (North-West Delhi) will serve as hub institutes, with each guiding up to four other ITIs on infrastructure, faculty development and industry linkages. The upgrades will include smart classrooms and simulation labs alongside mandatory internships and apprenticeship-enabled diploma pathways, a statement from the government said.
The Department of Training and Technical Education, headed by Minister of Higher Education, Training & Technical Education Ashish Sood, will act as the nodal agency for the implementation of the upgradation programme.
In addition, Mr. Sirsa said Delhi is building an ecosystem of Centres of Excellence at ITIs in Dheerpur, Mayur Vihar, and Pusa, where students are being trained in industrial automation, robotics and advanced welding. The Model Career Centre at Pusa has registered more than 7,000 youth, with 2,122 already placed through partnerships with companies such as PVR, JBM, Tata Electronics, Lemon Tree Hotels and L&T Constructions , the Minister added.
