GUWAHATI Home Minister Amit Shah, who began his two-day tour of Assam on Thursday (August 28, 2025), will formally launch the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign for the 2026 Assembly polls through a panchayat leaders’ conference on Friday (August 29, 2025) afternoon.

He is also scheduled to attend a programme to celebrate the birth centenary of Golap Borbora, the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Assam, apart from initiating or launching a slew of projects. Many of these are related to the security forces.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 301 out of the 397 zila parishad constituencies and 1,445 out of the 2,188 anchalik panchayat constituencies in the panchayat elections held in May.

Golap Borbora, Assam’s sixth Chief Minister, headed the Janata Party government from March 1978 to September 1979.

“Although our election machinery is on overdrive for the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council polls on September 22, the convention of our panchayat leaders is crucial for strategising our Assembly election campaign less than a year away,” a BJP spokesperson said.

The BJP and its regional allies have set a goal of winning more than 100 of the 126 Assembly seats in the 2026 polls. The NDA currently has 84 seats.

Mr. Shah, who reached Guwahati on Thursday night, chaired a meeting of the BJP’s core committee at the party headquarters. The focus of the meeting was on election strategy and other key organisational issues.

His schedule on Friday includes the inauguration of the newly constructed Brahmaputra wing of the Assam Raj Bhavan, e-inauguration of the National Cyber Forensic Laboratory, and the launch of several projects related to the paramilitary Assam Rifles, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, and Sashastra Seema Bal.
