The National Sports Day was celebrated by millions of people across the country in line with the aim of the Union Sports Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, to make it a Jan andolan.
The minister started the day by paying floral tributes to the statue of Major Dhyan Chand at the National Stadium and was active on the playground later at the Nehru Stadium with multiple sports activities, including a cricket match against the Media XI.
In the process, Mandaviya also inaugurated the country’s first Mondo track along with the PCI president Devendra Jhajharia, Olympian Anju Bobby George, Head of World Para Athletics Paul Fitzgerald, para athletes Sumit Antil, Simran Sharma, Preeti Pal, Praveen Kumar and many others.
“There is no bigger classroom than the sporting arena, and no greater teacher than sports”, said the Minister.
World and Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra called it a “a milestone moment for sport in Bharat”.
The celebrations will continue with sports debates, conclaves and indigenous sports on Saturday, followed by the Fit India Sundays on Cycle drive.
