Work on AVGC-XR and AI Centres of Excellence gains momentum in Tamil Nadu

Work on the AVGC-XR Centre of Excellence (CoE) is progressing steadily, with the detailed project report in the process of approval, said K.P. Karthikeyan, Managing Director of the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu.

“The concept design and related work are under way. In the first phase, we will set up a CoE in Chennai. In the second phase, we will establish five regional centres in collaboration with academia and industry. In the third phase, a larger CoE will come up at Vadapalani,” he said, adding that work pertaining to AI CoE was also progressing. 

He was speaking at the sidelines of the Digital Disruption and Transformation Summit and Exhibition, organised by the Federation of India Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

While presenting the budget for 2025-26, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu had said that AVGC-XR Centre of Excellence would come up in Chennai at an estimated cost of ₹50 crore. Subsequently, zonal sub-centres would be set up in a phased manner in Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Madurai, Salem, and Tirunelveli, in collaboration with educational institutions and start-up companies over the next three years.

A knowledge paper on “AI-driven Transformation of Various Sectors of Tamil Nadu Leading to $1 Trillion GDP Goal by 2030 Leading to Creation of Jobs and Opportunities” was released during the event.
