The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Tanuvas) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce four vocational programmes on Friday.

Addressing media persons, NIOS, Director of Vocational Education, T. N. Giri said, “The programmes are introduced to meet the skilled man requirement in the field of livestock and poultry.”

The four vocational programmes include two certificate programmes for six years in poultry farming, vermicomposting and one year diploma programmes in food and beverage operation, bakery and confectionery product preparation.

These courses will be offered in a month with study materials at â‚č3,000 at the affiliated colleges across the State. “These programmes are now available only in Tamil Nadu and will later be expanded across the country,” said NIOS Regional Director V. Santhanam.

Highlighting the flexible model of NIOS, Chairperson Akileh Mishra said, “NIOS flexible model will offer students through TANUVAS to take their education further. This will enable those in rural areas to take farming activities further with certification for their experience.”

Similarly, NIOS has also signed an MoU with Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sport University.

As the Tamil Nadu government has cleared the decks for students with NIOS certificates, they are now eligible for government jobs and promotions which has offered more options to the public, Mr. Santhanam added.

Further, NIOS will offer study materials in Tamil language for secondary courses too.
