Over 220 Vinayaka idols were taken out in procession by Hindu front organisations in Madurai on Friday evening.

Union Minister of State L. Murugan, Hindu Munnani state president, Kadeswara C. Subramanian, and BJP leader, Rama. Srinivasan, flagged off the procession on East Masi Street.

The leaders said that the Vinayaka procession had united the Hindus and was an opportunity to showcase the Hindu strength.

Hundreds of police personnel, led by Commissioner of Police J. Loganathan were deployed on all Masi Streets to regulate the processionists.

Riot-control vehicles and fire tenders were parked in front of two mosques on the procession route as a precautionary measure.

Hundreds of men and women and large number of urchins took part in the procession. Enthusiastic volunteers covered their faces with multi-hue powder.

With every third vehicle, carrying the idols, accompanied with bands playing drums, ensured that the enthusiasm of the youths did not die easily.

After passing through all the four Masi Streets the idols were taken to the Vaigai riverbed and immersed at Tirumalairayar padithurai.
