As many as 1,910 students across a diverse range of academic disciplines graduated from the National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-C) at an event held on its campus at Chathamangalam near here on Saturday. The graduating group included 1,126 BTech students, 48 in BArch, 30 in MPlan, 426 in MTech, 97 in MSc, 66 in MBA, and 117 Ph.D holders.
Delivering the convocation address, Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of State for Education, said that the NIT-C was recently designated by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs as a âcentre of excellence in urban planning and designingâ. It was the first NIT in the country to receive such a recognition. This, along with a grant of âč250 crore, was a proud milestone for the institution. The NIT-C had also been designated as a centre of excellence in logistics and supply chain management in collaboration with the National Institute for Training in Industrial Engineering, Mumbai (now renamed Indian Institute of Management, Mumbai), as well.
Mr. Majumdar told the students that their knowledge, values, and innovative spirit would play a vital role in shaping Indiaâs journey towards becoming a global hub of technology, research, and sustainable development.
T. Madhava Das, an alumnus from the 1985 batch of Electrical Engineering and current whole-time director and senior executive vice-president (utilities) at Larsen & Toubro Ltd., also addressed the assembly. The ceremony was presided over by Prasad Krishna, Chairperson, Board of Governors (in-charge) and Director of the institute. Mr. Krishna also presented the annual report.
Despite global hiring slowdowns, NIT-C has achieved over a thousand placements for the fourth consecutive year. More than 85% of undergraduates and 84% of postgraduates secured placements, with average packages of âč14.36 lakh per annum and âč12.41 lakh per annum, respectively, he added.
