A total of nine police stations across Coimbatore district will have Inspectors as station house officers (SHO) following the promotion of a large number of Sub-Inspectors across the State.

In Coimbatore City Police limit, Vadavalli station, which was under the jurisdiction of the Coimbatore District (Rural) Police until its merger with the city police in 2023, has been ungraded with an Inspector designated as the SHO. An Inspector has assumed office of the Law and Order station and holds the post of the SHO. The officer is additionally handling the post of the Inspector of the Investigation Wing, which is an additional unit in police stations in commissionerates.

Sulthanpet and Chettipalayam in Karumathampatti Sub-Division; K.G. Chavadi and Karunya Nagar in Perur Sub-Division; Mahalingapuram and Vadakkipalayam in Pollachi Sub-Division; Kottur in Valparai Sub-Division and Thadagam in Periyanaickenpalayam Sub-Division are police stations upgraded with Inspectors as SHO in Coimbatore rural. Among these, orders posting Inspectors as SHOs have been issued for Sulthanpet, Chettipalayam, Mahalingapuram, Kottur and Thadagam. They are expected to assume offices in the coming days.

Sources said that around 20 Inspectors, who have completed three years tenure in the city in the past four years, are expected to be transferred to other districts in view of the Assembly election in 2026. In Coimbatore rural, 11 inspectors are outgoing on transfers.

Vehicles not allotted for Inspectors

Meanwhile, police sources highlighted that the nine police stations, which have been upgraded with Inspectors as SHOs, have not been allocated vehicles for the new SHOs. They will have to be using the available additional vehicles of the station or patrol vehicles until new vehicles, typically an SUV of a widely used vehicle brand in the Police Department, arrive.
