Eight dogs were reportedly poisoned to death in ward 5 of Palladam Municipality in Tiruppur district on Monday. Health Department workers disposed off the carcasses.

According to the local body sources, the carcasses of the dogs were found in different locations, including Kamaraj Nagar and Pachapalayam.

The dogs were killed with poisoned meat, Raja, an animal welfare activist alleged. The lives of street dogs in the town were at stake, he said, demanding proper action by the police department.

Mr. Raja also urged the Palladam Municipality to sterilize the dogs regularly to control its population.

This is the first such incident in Western Tamil Nadu after what is perceived to be a landmark order issued by the Supreme Court on managing street dogs nationwide, focussing on vaccination and sterilisation. The order, in particular, prohibits feeding of the stray dogs in public areas.
