On November 24, 2024, Shekhar Ghosh was on call with his son as the IPL mega auction unfolded in Jeddah. His son, representing Maharashtra in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Hyderabad, had deliberately avoided watching television, focusing solely on his tournament.
Then a scream from the anxious parent at the other end: “Paddle uthaliya, paddle uthaliya!” Chennai Super Kings — one of IPL’s most successful franchises — acquired Ramakrishna Ghosh. For the family, it was a moment of overwhelming joy.
Playing for CSK is both a blessing and a challenge. The blessing? Sharing space with legends and learning from their mindset, discipline, and work ethic. The challenge? Intense competition for spots, especially for a side not known for chopping and changing playing XI’s.
In an exclusive chat with the The Hindu during the Buchi Babu tournament, Ramakrishna reflected on his time during the IPL and his unforgettable experience meeting M.S. Dhoni for the first time.
“It feels amazing to be in Chennai — it’s like a second home. I have wonderful memories from last season,” he said.
“I never imagined CSK would pick me. It was a dream come true. The first time I saw Mahi bhai, I was completely speechless. I just stood there, frozen — his presence, his aura — it was unreal”.
Ramakrishna recalled bowling in practice games and Dhoni’s advice that stuck with him: “After one session, Mahi bhai told me not to overwork, but to work smart and focus on consistency. That has stayed with me.”
But it was Dhoni’s emotional balance that left a deeper impact. “What I’ve learned seeing Mahi bhai is the importance of staying balanced — don’t get carried away when things go well, and don’t sink too low when they don’t”.
He also credited the CSK coaching staff. “The feedback from Mike Hussey and Stephen Fleming was very positive. I truly hope to be back in Yellow”.
