Over 300 residents of Boothagudi in Dindigul district, belonging to an intermediate caste, attempted to lay siege to the Dindigul Collectorate on Tuesday.
The residents demanded that the case registered against some of the residents of the village belonging to the intermediate caste under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act be dropped immediately.
The residents came to the Collectorate premises with utensils, stoves and even livestock to show their protest against the case registered against them. A case was registered against people belonging to the intermediate caste following a dispute over the installation of a microphone set during a temple festival conducted in Boothagudi.
Demanding the withdrawal of the case against them, the people attempted to lay siege to the Collectorate. However, the police personnel stopped them from entering the District Collector’s office. After the police personnel held talks and assured the people that the issue would be looked into, the people dispersed.
