Members of different political outfits and relatives of a deceased person staged a sit-in protest at Government Ramanathapuram Medical College Hospital on Tuesday, refusing to accept the body as “the death was caused by lack of proper treatment”.

Muthu, 32, a resident of Pattinamkathan near Ramanathapuram, fainted, fell in the bathroom at home and sustained a head injury on August 27. He was immediately admitted to Government Ramanathapuram Medical College Hospital for treatment.

On Monday, as Muthu vomitted, his wife Nandhini, who was attending to him, alerted the nurses on duty.

The protesters alleged that the doctors did not show up at the bedside. Later in the evening, Muthu was transferred to the emergency department, but he died in the night.

Claiming that Muthu died due negligence of the nurses and the doctors at the hospital, his relatives and members of Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front and the VCK staged a sit-in protest on the hospital premises and refused to accept the body.

Despite talks conducted by the police officials, the protesters refused to accept the body, demanding registration of a case against the doctors and the nurses involved.

Subsequently, based on a complaint filed by Nandhini, Kenikarai police registered a case against the nurses and the doctors who were on duty on Monday.

Later, the protesters received the body and dispersed.
