Neelankarai police arrested an armed gang of five that planned to rob people on East Coast Road (ECR) and other places in the city.
During a regular vehicle check on ECR,a police team intercepted their car and questioned them.
Fake number plate
As they were evasive in their replies, the police searched the car and seized three knives. The number plate of the vehicle was found to be fake. They were taken to the police station and questioned further.
The gang members then revealed that they had entered the city with a plan to rob people on ECR and in other places. The police arrested the men identified as Udhayanidhi alias Surya, 29, of Madurai; Vigneshwaran, 28, of Namakkal; Arif Lal, 32 of Kallakurichi; Arun, 30, of Sivaganga; and Ram Kumar, 28, of Sivaganga. All of them were history-sheeters.
