To create awareness on the rising heart attack cases among the young, the State-run Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research has launched a short educational audio-visual capsule titled ”Nimma Hrudaya Namma Kalaji” (Your Heart, Our Care).

The video, released on Tuesday by Lokayukta B.S. Patil, highlights the importance of adopting healthy lifestyle practices, early detection of risk factors, and timely medical intervention to prevent cardiac ailments.

Institute director K.S. Ravindranath said the campaign will use YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram to educate people on early detection, risk factors, and preventive measures for heart health.

“Heart attack cases are rising among younger populations, with an average of 30 cardiac patients admitted daily in our institute. Nearly 20% to 25% of them are under 45 years,” he said.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have become a major global threat, accounting for 60% to 70% of deaths, of which 25% to 30% are due to heart attacks and strokes.

Dr. Ravindranath said the Premature Coronary Artery Disease (PCAD) project at Jayadeva – under which over 5,000 heart patients below the age of 40 have been  enrolled –  has revealed new risk factors in young patients, including abnormal lipoproteins, insulin resistance, and elevated homo-cysteine levels.

“Lifestyle habits such as smoking, tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, sedentary routines, unhealthy diets high in fats and carbohydrates, and sugary beverages are major contributors. Rising obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, stress, pollution, and family history further aggravate the risk,” he added.
