A skill development programme on backyard poultry farming was conducted by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Dharmapuri, for 25 farmers selected from across the district.
The 210-hour duration programmefocused on 52 major topics including scientific knowledge on poultry breeds, selection and culling, feeding practices, housing and management, breeding and reproduction, disease control, vaccination schedules, deworming, ethno-veterinary treatments, poultry waste management, entrepreneurship development, and the establishment of profitable commercial poultry farms.
The training was held from July 30, 2025 to September 1, 2025. The training spanned 26 days with 8 hours of sessions daily, benefiting the selected farmers.
Eminent scientists and specialists from TNAU, TANUVAS, the Department of Animal Husbandry, ICAR institutions, and progressive farmers delivered lectures and practical demonstrations, and ensured participants gained both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience.
According to KVK, to strengthen practical learning, 10 exposure visits were organised to poultry hatchery units, feed mills, duck, turkey and quail parent units, fancy bird farms, fodder banks, azolla cultivation units, vermicompost production units, meat and egg value addition centres, and financial institutions offering loan assistance.
Farmers also visited broiler farms, slaughterhouses, and local shandies, where they interacted with progressive farmers, observed real-world practices, understood constraints in farm establishment, learned marketing strategies, and explored methods to achieve higher profits with lower inputs.
