The city received light to moderate rainfall on Wednesday, with the highest rainfall recorded at Gajuwaka (54mm) in the city.

Light to moderate rains are expected at a few places over the next few days particularly in north coastal Andhra Pradesh. The meteorological authorities including the AP State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) attributed Wednesday’s rainfall to active southwest monsoon conditions, induced by a trough associated with a low pressure area that had formed over the Bay of Bengal along the coast of neighbouring Odisha.

Prakhar Jain, managing director, APSDMA said: “The low pressure area in the northwest Bay of Bengal laid centred over the north Odisha coast.”

Due to this, light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvatipuram, Alluri Sitharama Raju districts on Thursday.

As of 5 pm on Wednesday, 54 mm of rainfall was recorded at Nakkapalli in Anakapalli district, the State’s highest rainfall. This was followed by 53.2 mm in Gajuwaka in Visakhapatnam, 44.5 mm in Vempadu in Anakapalli district, 44.2 mm in Nathayyapalem in Visakhapatnam, and 36 mm in Merakamudidam in Vizianagaram district.

Mr. Jain added that the flood flow of the Godavari river is likely to increase slightly. At 5 pm on Wednesday, the water level at Bhadrachalam in Godavari was 40.7 feet, while Dhawaleswaram received inflow of 8,67,660 cusecs. Meanwhile the Krishna river flood has receded and it was 76,216 cusecs at the Prakasam Barrage.

He cautioned residents living in the low-lying areas of the river basins to remain alert until the water levels in the Krishna and Godavari rivers subside.
