The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday issued directions to authorities for the conduct of postmortem of TNSTC driver G. Ramakrishnan who was found dead on Wednesday in a dump yard in Uchapatti under Austinpatti police station limits.
The court was hearing the petition filed by R. Ramu Thulasi, wife of the deceased driver. She sought a direction to the authorities to conduct the postmortem as per guidelines issued by the court in the case of Santhosh Vs. District Collector and others. She raised suspicion over her husband’s death.
The State submitted that the guidelines issued by the court in the case of Santhosh Vs. District Collector and others would not be applicable to the facts of the present case as in that case the deceased had died in police custody. It was also submitted that the postmortem could not be conducted so far since the petitioner, her family members and others staged a road roko and created a law and order issue.
Justice Sunder Mohan observed that the directions issued by the court in Santhosh’s case cannot be issued in all cases where there is suspicious death. The court without going into the merits of the allegations made by the petitioner issued directions for conduct of postmortem.
The court directed the postmortem to be conducted by a team of two doctors with Master’s degree in Forensic Medicine and attached to a Medical College and Hospital in the State. The postmortem should be videographed and kept in safe custody, the court directed.
