Puducherry Assembly Speaker R. Selvam on Friday (September 5, 2025) said a special session of the Legislative Assembly will be convened soon to discuss the demand for Statehood for the Union Territory (UT).
Addressing a press conference at the Assembly, the Speaker said some of the legislators belonging to the All India N.R. Congress have demanded the convening of the Assembly to discuss the Statehood demand. A special session of the Assembly has been proposed to take up the Statehood issue, he said.
The government is hopeful of laying the foundation for a new Assembly complex this year itself. Secretary, Public Works, Muthamma has been tasked with following up with Central government on the approval process, he said.
Welcoming the decision of Central government to revamp the Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure, Mr. Selvam said the reforms were carried out with welfare of people in mind. He said the decision to rationalise the GST structure will lead to a reduction in prices of essential commodities and consumer goods. Further, the decision to move individual life and health insurance policies to nil from 18% will be of great relief, he said.
