A minor scuffle broke out between the CITU workers and the BJP functionaries here on Friday.
Pressing for communal and religious harmony, the CITU, Tamil Nadu Vivasaayigal Sangam and a few more Left organisations started its district-wide campaign from the memorial of martyr V.O. Chidambaram at Ottapidaaram on Thursday. They rallyists had planned to conclude their campaign at VOC statue on the Old Corporation Building here on Friday, the day when the birth anniversary of the martyr is celebrated.
Even as CITU state secretary Russel was addressing the rallyists near the VOC statue on Friday, representatives of various political parties started garlanding the statue. When the BJP functionaries arrived there, Mr. Russel was reportedly launching scathing attack on the Union Government’s policies.
As a BJP functionary snatched away the microphone from Mr. Russel, the CITU functionaries resisted it leading to scuffle between both sides.
Since the police, led by Inspector of Police, Thoothukudi Central Police Station, Bhaskaran had been deployed there, the unruly scenes came to an end.
However, the CITU and the BJP filed separate complaints with the police later.
