The removal of Gobichettipalayam MLA and former Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan from key organisational posts has prompted a large number of AIADMK functionaries in the constituency to resign.
Mr. Sengottaiyan was relieved of his responsibilities as organisation secretary and secretary of the Erode Suburban (West) District unit on Saturday. The action followed a day after he called for strengthening the AIADMK by readmitting those who had left — a stand which was at odds with that of general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
In protest, more than 2,000 party workers holding posts submitted their resignation in Nambiyur and Gobichettipalayam.
One such letter read, “Mr. Sengottaiyan said the AIADMK must regain its strength, move forward on the path of victory, and ensure a people-centric government in the footsteps of M.G. Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa. Since he has been removed from party responsibilities for voicing these views, I am resigning from my post in protest. If unity is restored in the party, I will continue in my post.”
The functionaries said their resignation was to protest against Mr. Sengottaiyan’s removal, but they would remain in their roles if the party achieved unity.
