It has been some years since I saw an old school menu with options like Chateaubriand steak, shepherd’s pie and chicken a la Kiev. I am at the newly opened Juliana’s Bistro in Bengaluru’s Infantry Road, and the place takes me back to ‘continental’ restaurants from back in the day like Casa Piccola. Opened by the owners of Safina Plaza, the bistro aims to be a one stop for coffee and conversations near the commercial street area.

The restaurant is founded by Sabrina Sait and her brother Feroz Sait, who are from the family that has owned the plaza for generations. “We wanted to bring the life back into Safina Plaza,” they say. The design is modern with industrial elements, sculptural chandeliers and wall art. Shades of green and browns dominate. There is also an outdoor cobblestone-paved seating area to complete the bistro vibe, although the street may be too noisy for that.
I pore over the menu. There are starters, mains, Asian dishes, desserts and mocktails. They have a coffee menu that has matcha as well. To beat the heat, I start with an Island Mary. Tomato juice, fresh lime and spices. The drink is a tad salty but refreshing. From the small plates, I try the balsamic glazed mushrooms, and it is the best dish on the table. Baked button mushrooms are topped with spinach and goat’s cheese, and finished with a balsamic-cranberry glaze.

I try a soupy dumpling next, from the Asian side of the menu. The juicy dumpling has a thin casing and a flavourful filling. The broth is warm and umami-forward. I have it with a side of salt and pepper lotus stem. The lotus stems are wok tossed in a spicy coating. I keep going back for more.
For mains I go for a lasagna. The hefty slice is served with a creamy white sauce, and a spicy Marianara sauce. The layers are stuffed with cheese and veggies, and the top layer was crispy, just the way I like it.
I finish with a classic — creme brulee. The little ramekin comes with a crackling caramelised top. The custard is infused with a hint of almonds, and the dish is not too sweet. They also do an apple pie a la mode, which I am saving for my next visit.
As Sabrina says, “I want this cafe to be a space where you can bring anyone. Your date, your girls, your mom, maybe after a round of shopping. We want to that place that you feel safe and comfortable in, especially as a woman.” Right outside Juliana’s is a flower shop in collaboration with Farmerr.in so you can pick up a bouquet after brunch.
