A major security breach was reported at the Navy’s residential area in South Mumbai after a man impersonating naval personnel fled with a rifle and ammunition, prompting the Indian Navy and Mumbai Police to launch an extensive search operation on Monday (September 8, 2025).
According to the Defence PRO, the incident occurred on Saturday (September 6, 2025) night, when a rifle along with ammunition went missing from a sentry post in the Navy’s residential complex.
Preliminary inquiry suggests that a junior sailor on sentry duty was approached by another individual in naval uniform, who claimed he had been detailed to relieve him. The individual who took over the post was later found missing along with the weapon and ammunition, the PRO stated.
“An extensive search operation is underway in coordination with Mumbai Police to recover the lost items. A Board of Inquiry has been convened to investigate the circumstances leading to the incident. The case is also under probe by other Government agencies, with the Indian Navy extending full cooperation,” the PRO added.
