Nepal is set to witness a regime change with Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli stepping down after protests erupted in its capital and other cities on September 8, the deadliest in nearly two decades.
At least 19 people were killed and more than 400 were injured after police used rubber bullets, tear gas, and even live rounds on demonstrators opposing a sweeping social media ban. Protesters refused to relent even after the Oli government revoked the ban, and assured a probe into the deaths.
Is it a spontaneous, apolitical protest and was the social media ban the actual trigger? Who will takeover the reigns of the Himalayan state and what lays ahead in the country sandwiched between two mighty economies – India and China?
To unpack these questions, we’ll be joined by analyst Akanshya Shah and Nepal journalist Sanjeev Satgainya, with the discussion anchored by Kallol Bhattacherjee.
