HYDERABAD
With some let up in rains and agricultural operations requiring pumping of groundwater along with use of surface water, the consumption of energy in the State, particularly in the Southern Discom areas comprising 15 districts, including the State Capital, is on the sharp rise.
On Monday, September 8, the State clocked a peak load of 15,906 megawatt power with the energy consumption recorded at 296.64 million units. Of it, the Southern Discom has availed 203.38 MU energy with the peak load clocked at 10,450 MW, the highest ever during the monsoon season.
According to Chairman and Managing Director of the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Ltd (TGSPDCL) Md. Musharraf Faruqui, the previous peak load of power recorded during the monsoon season was 9,910 MW on September 20 last year and the peak load in the State was 15,570 MW.
He instructed the Discom officials of the rural districts to remain vigilant and ensure uninterrupted power supply without any issues. Due to recent heavy rainfall water availability has increased, leading to a significant rise in energy use in the agriculture sector. Compared to the same season last year, power consumption has increased by over 50%, he noted.
Energy consumption in several districts has nearly doubled in the Southern Discom areas, particularly in the combined Nalgonda district. Energy use in combined Nalgonda on September 1 last year was 13.6 MU and on the same day this year it was 33.82 MU, a 148% surge in consumption.
About 26,000 additional distribution transformers have been sanctioned this year in the Southern Discom and there are 4.92 lakh distribution transformers in rural districts now, he explained.
