HC grants bail to two persons accused in Madurai property tax scam

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court granted bail with certain conditions to two persons accused in the property tax scam in Madurai Corporation.

Justice S. Srimathy granted bail to S. Ravi and P. Karunakaran, data entry operators of Madurai Corporation. The court restrained the two accused from entering Madurai Corporation premises. The court directed them to report before the police every day till further orders. The accused were directed to cooperate in the investigation.

The case of the prosecution is that the accused in the case by misusing the official login credentials had reduced the property tax for more than 150 buildings between April 1, 2022 and July 31, 2024 and caused loss to Madurai Corporation. After coming to know about the irregularities in the records of UTIS, an online property tax management platform, the then Corporation Commissioner lodged a complaint. A case was registered based on the complaint.
