The district police seized ₹1.5 crore in cash from a car during a vehicle check at Perundurai on Thursday (September 24) night. The cash was handed over to Income Tax Department officials for further inquiry after the two occupants of the vehicle failed to produce supporting documents for the amount, the police said.
The traffic police were conducting checks at the SIPCOT check-post when they signalled a car approaching at high speed to stop. The vehicle allegedly did not stop and proceeded past the check-post, following which the police chased it. The car was intercepted near the roundabout at the old bus stand in Perundurai after the police overtook and stopped it.
The occupants were identified as Swapnil Nagne (35) and Akshay (37) from Maharashtra. They told the police that they were working at a gold and silver refining facility in Coimbatore.
During questioning, their responses about why they did not stop at the check-post were reportedly contradictory. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a bag containing bundles of ₹500 notes, totalling ₹1.5 crore.
The occupants could not produce documents relating to the cash or provide details about its source, the police said. The police informed the Income Tax Department and handed over the cash to its officials. Further details are expected after the inquiry.
