The Cyberabad traffic police booked 377 drunk driving cases during a weekend special enforcement drive conducted between December 26 and 27, as part of intensified checks across the commissionerate to curb driving under the influence of alcohol.

Miyapur topped the list with 48 cases followed by Shadnagar with 42 cases and Shamshabad and Chevella with 35 cases each. Jeedimetla with 13 cases was among the areas with lowest cases followed by KPHB and RC Puram with 15 cases each. Kukatpally recorded zero cases.

According to the police, the majority of the offenders were riding two-wheelers, accounting for 300 cases, followed by 58 cases involving four-wheelers. Seventeen cases were registered against three-wheelers, while two heavy vehicle drivers were also found driving under the influence.

Based on blood alcohol concentration levels, police said 317 offenders recorded BAC readings between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Another 39 offenders were found with BAC levels ranging from 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml, while 21 motorists registered dangerously high levels between 301 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml. All the accused will be produced before the court.

Officials said that anyone found driving in an inebriated condition and causing a fatal accident would be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment along with a fine.

Meanwhile, during the previous week from December 22 to 27, courts disposed of 55 drunk driving cases. Of these, one person was sentenced to both fine and imprisonment, five were ordered to pay a fine and perform social service, while 49 were penalised with fines alone, as per the Cyberabad traffic police.
