43 students fall sick after consuming midday meal in Shorapur

As many as 43 students of a lower primary school located in Timmapur in Shorapur city have fallen sick after consuming midday meal on Monday.

According to Taluk Health Officer Raja Venkatappa Naik, the 43 students have been brought to the Taluk Hospital for treatment.

Out of them, 42 students got treatment in the outpatient department (OPD), while one student was admitted. She was then discharged after necessary treatment.

All 43 students have been sent back, he added.

Students complained of becoming unwell, while one of them showed signs of mild giddiness after consuming rice and sambar served to them, sources said.

But anxious parents said that the staff served lizard-contaminated food without checking it and demanded action against those responsible.

When contacted, Block Education Officer Yallappa Kadlur told The Hindu that he rushed to the hospital after receiving information.

All students are out of danger and discharged now, he added.

He said that he will ask midday meal officers to send food samples to laboratory for testing to ascertain the reason that led to the incident.
