Officials of the Civil Supplies CID on Monday seized 5,500 free dhoti and saree sets that were illegally transported and hoarded for sale here.
Acting on a tip-off, Revenue Department officials conducted a search at a house on Valayakara Street, where the consignments, brought in a goods vehicle from Coimbatore district, were allegedly stockpiled. During the inspection, officials found the government-supplied free dhoti–saree sets packed in five bundles. The items were meant to be distributed to ration card holders at free of cost for the Pongal festival.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Civil Supplies CID, following which officials seized the entire consignment along with the goods vehicle used for transportation.
An inquiry is currently under way with three persons in connection with the incident.
