A brief spell of rainfall in Nagercoil and its neighbourhood led to water stagnation on several major roads of the city on Thursday.
Although the rainwater receded within a couple of hours in several areas, the situation has raised concerns among residents and motorists over the condition of stormwater drains and the preparedness of the civic authorities ahead of the notheast monsoon.
Around an hour of rainfall resulted in waterlogging in several low-lying areas in Kottar, WCC Road, east entrance of Nagaraja temple, some parts of Vadasery and several other areas in the city.
Benjamin, a resident of Christu Nagar, said the civic authorities should continuously monitor desilting works and other activities undertaken across the city. “The WCC Road is used by hundreds of college students and commuters everyday and the authorities must ensure proper drainage on these roads.”
The water stagnation on Thursday affected motorists and pedestrians, with several commuters opting for alternative routes after encountering waterlogged stretches. Some motorists said they were unaware of the condition of the roads until they reached the affected area.
Nagercoil Corporation Commissioner R. Ishwarya told The Hindu that 90% of desilting work had been completed across the city. Water receded in most areas within two hours. However, in some low-lying areas where water remained stagnant, motor pumps were deployed to drain it.
