Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday (October 8, 2026) said that she may participate in the Cockroach Janta Party-sponsored protest demanding the removal of Gyanesh Kumar as Chief Election Commissioner at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on October 10.
Ms. Banerjee confirmed her presence at the October 10 gathering before leaving for Delhi while speaking to mediapersons in Kolkata. “I may join the protest at Jantar Mantar scheduled for October 10, but nothing can be confirmed now. We have maintained a relationship with them (the CJP) and have extended our support…,” Ms. Banerjee said. The former West Bengal Chief Minister has expressed support to the CJP over the past few months and CJP leaders have thanked Ms. Banerjee for her support.

The leader of the Mamata All India Trinamool Congress said that she also intends to approach the President of India on the issue of vote theft and Special Intensive Revision. Ms. Banerjee is also likely to join the march of MPs of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance to the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Friday (October 9, 2026).
“I also intend to approach the Honourable President of India and seek the signatures and support of leaders from political parties across the country, because these concerns go beyond individual parties and require the attention of political leaders at the national level,” she said.

The former Chief Minister said that despite the festive season, she was going to Delhi “for Bengal” and said that “no one can remain in power indefinitely by looting votes“. “No election has taken place yet like this [2026 West Bengal Assembly election]. Have you ever heard of anyone declaring before an election exactly how many votes they will win by? This clearly raises questions about calculated voting, bogus voting, rigging and vote looting,” she said.
Ms. Banerjee also came in support of Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi and said that the manner in which the Delhi Police treated Ms. Gandhi was wrong.
“Everyone has the right to take part in a movement, but the way Priyanka was treated was also very wrong. Every household has women, mothers and children, and they deserve respect and protection, irrespective of political differences. No political movement should result in the targeting or intimidation of family members,” she said.
Ms. Banerjee’s nephew and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee is already in Delhi and on Thursday joined leaders of the INDIA bloc at Raj Ghat. The Mamata AITC leader said that Mr. Gyanesh Kumar has already been brutally exposed. “Three hundred Opposition MPs are seeking to meet the CEC, yet they are being stopped. What is the reason for this reluctance? Why is accountability seemingly absent from the BJP’s vocabulary?” he said.
