After months of waiting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II project on Sunday (October 11, 2026). 

Six years since the work began, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL)’s first train from Porur Bypass is all set to run till Poonamallee around 11.30 a.m., with Mr. Modi and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to be among the first few commuters.

In a post on X, Mr. Modi said he would inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for development projects worth over ₹13,000 crore in Chennai on Sunday (October 11, 2026). The projects span metro Rail, highway, railway, port, petroleum, and scientific research sectors. 

In the highway sector, Mr. Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for projects worth around ₹3,700 crore. The railway projects, worth more than ₹750 crore, include the dedication of the Karaikal-Peralam railway line and three rail overbridges in Coimbatore and neighbouring areas.

The Prime Minister will also launch projects to expand maritime infrastructure and cargo-handling capacity at Chennai Port, V.O. Chidambaranar Port, and Kamarajar Port. In the petroleum sector, he will lay the foundation stone for a Group II/III lube oil base stocks project at the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Manali refinery.
