The ongoing Mission 45 programme of the Department of School Education and Literacy to ensure that no Class 10 student gets less than 45% in the SSLC examination, has given impetus to SSLC examination preparation in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The two districts were in the top two positions, in terms of pass percentage, in the State in the last two years.
For nearly a decade, teachers in the two districts have been giving to slow learners subject-wise booklets containing most-likely questions that could be asked, and making slow learners to practice it by conducting special classes.
The pass percentage of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi was at 88.55 and 90.52, respectively, and they were ranked 23 and 15 respectively in 2022. In 2023, Dakshina Kannada was ranked 16 with pass percentage of 89.5 and Udupi stood at 19 with pass percentage of 89.18.
In 2024, the question paper pattern changed wherein students had to answer questions for 100 marks for first language paper, and 80 marks for the remaining five papers. All the six papers had 20 marks for practical, which was internal marks given by school. Udupi bagged the top position with pass percentage of 97.94, while Dakshina Kannada came second 97.46. In the first of three attempts of SSLC examination in 2025, Dakshina Kannada bagged the top position with pass percentage of 91.18 while Udupi stood second with 89.55 %.
“We want 70% of the students from the region score 80 percentage or more in the forthcoming (SSLC-1) examination,” said Prakash G.T. Nittali, Chairperson of Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board, during the SSLC result improvement workshop for teachers of the two districts held here on December 20. The KSEAB is holding Mission 45 programme across schools in the State.
Principal Secretary to School Education and Literacy Rashmi Mahesh and Commissioner for School Education Vikas Kishor Suralkar said preparatory material, including question bank, has been given before hand. Teachers should make students to practice answering questions and ensure no student is left out in SSLC examination, the two officers said at the workshop.
Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Narwade Vinayak Karbhari said taluk-wise list of Class 10 students who have not fared well in one, two and more subjects in the school level assessment has been made. Dakshina Kannada Deputy Director of Public Instruction G. Shashidhar said from the question bank, subject-wise booklets, containing questions that help students getting the necessary pass marks, have been provided to students in December first week. “In these two months of preparation period, teachers will be making students practice writing these questions,” he said.
Udupi DDPI C. Lokesh said teachers will be encouraged to continue with their present preparation schedule, which would pave the way for every student to clear the SSLC examination in the first attempt.
The State-wide first preparatory exam will be held between January 5 and 10. The second preparatory examination will be held between January 27 and February 2, while the third preparatory will be held between February 23 and 28. Marks scored in each three preparatory examinations will be uploaded in the Students Achievement Tracking System portal, and necessary corrective steps in preparation will be taken before the annual SSLC examination scheduled between March 18 and April 2, officials said.
