A retired government employee from the Airport area in Tiruchi was cheated of ₹90 lakh after fraudsters threatened him with “digital arrest”, the police said on Friday.

The 57-year-old victim received a call from a person posing as a Delhi police officer, who falsely claimed that his bank account was linked to a criminal case. Fearing arrest, he transferred the money to an account provided by the caller.

Realising the fraud later, he lodged a complaint with the Tiruchi city cyber crime police. A case has been registered and investigation is under way.

The police said there was no such thing as a “digital arrest” and urged the public not to panic or fall prey to such scams.
