To commemorate World Heart Day on September 29, Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Madurai, organised a walkathon to raise awareness of cardiovascular health and encourage the community to adopt healthier lifestyle practices on Sunday.

More than 2,000 participants took part in the event, reinforcing the importance of preventive care, regular physical activity and heart-healthy living.

The walkathon commenced at 6 a.m. from the Gandhi Memorial Museum, Madurai, covering a 3-km route around the venue. Participants were provided with T-shirts, bags, refreshments, medals and certificates.

Cardiologists C. Vivek Bose, P. Subburamakrishnan, S.K.P. Karuppiah, M. Selvaganesh, M. Rangamanikandan and L.K.Senthilkumar along with surgeons V. Sridhar and Manfred Fernando and Neurologist S. Meenakshi Sundaram highlighted the importance of regular health screenings, early diagnosis and timely medical intervention.

Speaking on the occasion, the doctors said, “Heart health is essential for longevity. Events like these remind the community of the importance of preventive care, a balanced diet and regular exercise to maintain a healthy heart.”

The programme also included an energetic warm-up and Zumba session led by John Benny, a sports medicine practitioner, who shared insights into the benefits of regular walking and physical activity.

Addressing the gathering, chief executive officer Nikhil Tiwari said, “Our doctors have transformed Apollo into a national centre of excellence, offering hope and healing to patients not just in India, but across the globe.”

Through the World Heart Day walkathon, Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Madurai, has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting heart health and preventive healthcare, encouraging individuals and families to make informed lifestyle choices and take proactive steps towards a healthier heart, he added.
