Gadgets of ROV set up by scientists from Central Soil Material Research Station, to take up a comprehensive dam safety analysis of Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala, on Monday.

A team of scientists from Central Soil Material Research Station, New Delhi, will take up a comprehensive dam safety analysis of Mullaperiyar dam from Tuesday.
The team would deploy a Remotely-Operated Vehicle (ROV) to study the submerged water face of the structure of the Main dam for 12 days.
“The team has assembled the ROV and conducted a trial run on Monday and will begin the dam safety study from Tuesday,” said Superintending Engineer, Periyar Vaigai Basin Circle, J. Sam Erwin, of Water Resources Department.
The ROV has been previously used in 2012 under the instruction of Empowered Committee.
As per the Dam Safety Act, 2021 the comprehensive dam safety analysis should be conducted once in every 10 years.
The underwater vehicle is equipped with sensors, cameras, lights and robotic arms to perform underwater operations to study the water face.
It would detect any deterioration of the submerged dam structure like cracks and fissures. The ROV can go upto the bed of the dam.
The team includes scientists P. Senthil, Vijay and Dr. Joy Lingasamy.
