Citizens’ Voice Coimbatore (CVC) has urged authorities to strengthen enforcement of food safety regulations, citing concerns over misleading organic food claims, unhygienic food handling, repeated use of cooking oil and improper food labelling.
The organisation called on the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to strengthen certification and monitoring to prevent conventionally grown produce from being sold as organic. It also sought regular inspections of mutton and fish stalls, shawarma outlets, roadside eateries and tiffin centres to ensure hygienic food preparation and storage.
CVC recommended intensified surveillance and sample testing to curb the repeated use of cooking oil in eateries and strict enforcement of packaging and labelling norms for products such as cakes, sweets, batter, idiyappam and sevai.
The organisation also urged authorities to ensure that food handlers wear caps, gloves and protective clothing, take action against medical shops operating without qualified pharmacists, and continue maintaining adequate stocks of anti-snake venom and anti-rabies medicines in government health facilities.
It further called for regular monitoring of the use of artificial colours in sweets, cakes and ice creams, and suggested that retail outlets display the list of FSSAI-approved food colours to improve consumer awareness.
