Police arrested 112 CITU functionaries as they staged road roko here on Tuesday against the anti-labour laws.

The protestors said the introduction of 12-hour working hours a day, the outsourcing of the government departments’ works and withdrawal of the labour welfare schemes being implemented by various government departments would seriously affect the labourers. Moreover, it would also seriously hit the country’s productivity, they said.

CITU district president Murugan presided over the agitation which was inaugurated by state secretary Thanga Mohan.

As the protestors blocked the vehicular traffic at Vannarpet, the police arrested 112 persons who were released in the evening.

Similar agitation was organised in Thoothukudi, Tenkasi and Nagercoil also where the police detained 264 protestors.
