The Coimbatore Corporation will undertake a month-long drive to create awareness among residents on rainwater harvesting and strengthen systems to conserve rainwater and recharge groundwater ahead of the northeast monsoon.

A senior Corporation official said 74 rainwater stagnation points were identified in the West Zone alone, with assessment of other areas under way. Most of the identified points were on main roads, where runoff would be channelled to nearby wells or defunct borewells through suitable recharge structures. Eco Bloc rainwater harvesting systems would also be installed at suitable locations to allow collected rainwater to percolate into the ground.

“Dry or unused wells will be rejuvenated as recharge points. Houses in the surrounding area can be connected to a common well so that rainwater from the properties can be channelled into it. This will help conserve rainwater and recharge groundwater locally,” the official said.

The Corporation would take up the initiative across all five zones, beginning with public awareness on the importance of rainwater harvesting. Officials would subsequently inspect existing rainwater harvesting structures and clean and restore those that were damaged or non-functional. New structures would be created at identified rainwater stagnation points.

Officials have also been instructed to desilt stormwater drains and watercourses.

A review meeting on rainwater harvesting was held at the five zonal offices on Thursday (October 1, 2026), chaired by the respective Assistant Commissioners. Officials were asked to inspect rainwater harvesting structures at Corporation parks, vacant sites, buildings, marriage halls, community halls and hospitals and ensure that they were functional. They were also instructed to inspect houses to ascertain whether rainwater harvesting systems were in place.

The Corporation aimed to complete the initial works within a month so that rainwater received during the season could be conserved and used for groundwater recharge, the official said.
