Coimbatore Corporation to install 5,700 new LED streetlights

The Coimbatore Corporation will install 5,700 new LED streetlights across the city, with locations identified as vulnerable to anti-social activities to be given priority.

Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja said the Corporation had obtained details of such locations from the police and would take them up in the first phase. Newly developed areas and roads without streetlights would also be covered, he said.

The Corporation currently maintains around 1.05 lakh streetlights across its 100 wards. On the operation and maintenance (O&M) contract, Mr. Ravi Teja said there had been complaints about the contractor failing to attend to faults and repair requests properly. The issue had been discussed and the Corporation was planning to invite a fresh tender to engage another agency for the work, he said.

Clarifying complaints that petitions submitted through the Corporation’s digital grievances system were being closed without the faulty streetlights being restored, Mr. Ravi Teja said there was a distinction between attending to a repair and replacing a light. Where replacement was required, the petition was closed after informing the complainant that procurement would be undertaken and the new light installed, he said.

“We have the lights and will install them across the city soon,” he said.
