The Coimbatore Corporation is set to step up enforcement against the use of banned plastic products in the city.

The Tamil Nadu Government banned 14 categories of plastic products in 2019, citing their impact on human health and the environment. The Centre banned 19 categories of single-use plastic products in 2022.

Following the bans, the Corporation has been conducting inspections and seizure drives against the use and sale of banned plastic products. However, such products continue to be available in several parts of the city, including Gandhipuram, Town Hall and R.S. Puram.

As part of its efforts to promote alternatives to plastic items, the Corporation opened a ‘Pasumai Angadi’ at its main office in 2018 to sell biodegradable carry bags. It had also announced plans to extend the initiative to its zonal offices. However, the initiative did not gain momentum.

According to the corporation, from January to September, officials inspected 6,713 shops, seized 3,456 kg of banned plastic and imposed fines totalling ₹19 lakh.

On Tuesday, officials seized 630 kg of plastic items from a private company in Ram Nagar and imposed a fine of ₹25,000.

The Corporation will continue inspections and enforcement measures to reduce the use of banned and non-recyclable plastic products in the city.
