Collector Pratik Tayal has directed officials of the Transport, Police, Highways and Revenue departments to conduct a joint inspection of the Kudamurutti–Pettavaithalai section of the Tiruchi-Karur Highway and initiate immediate measures to address road safety concerns along the stretch.
The direction follows a request from Tiruchi MP Durai Vaiko, based on petitions from residents highlighting several accident risks on the highway, including roadside encroachments, temporary shops and eateries, heavy vehicles parked along the road and narrowing of the carriageway at certain locations.
The officials have been asked to conduct a field inspection and submit a report within three days, detailing the immediate and permanent measures proposed to address the identified safety concerns.
Particular attention has been sought in Kambarasampettai, Kadiyakurichi and Jeeyapuram, where the lack of adequate parking and resting facilities for heavy vehicles has resulted in vehicles being parked along the roadside, increasing the risk of accidents.
The stretch near Kavanur, where safety fencing is being constructed by the railways has narrowed the road at certain locations. In Kambarasampettai, officials have been asked to examine the issue concerning a pathway that has been used by the public for a long period and find an appropriate solution.
In a letter to the Collector, Mr. Durai Vaiko suggested examining the feasibility of constructing central medians at suitable locations, based on the available road width and traffic conditions. He also suggested installing speed breakers at identified accident-prone locations in Allur Colony, Pazhur, Kambarasampettai, Periyar Nagar, Cauvery Nagar, Mallatchipuram and near Birds Park, besides ensuring adequate street lighting at accident-prone locations and at places where speed breakers are installed.
Mr. Tayal instructed the authorities to identify suitable locations for establishing parking and resting facilities for heavy vehicles to prevent them from being parked along the highway.
A study has also been sought into encroachments along the Cauvery riverbank and temporary structures obstructing road usage. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the inspection.
