The Communist Party of India has urged the government to take immediate steps for the regularisation of services of honorary lecturers, honorary graduate teachers and Bala Sevigas appointed in the Education Department.
In a statement, CPI secretary A. M. Saleem said around 290 contract teachers have been on strike for some time. The government should not ignore their demand for regularisation as they were recruited adhering to the norms. There was legally no bar in absorbing them, he said.
The government had in the past regularised services of those working under various programmes in School Education Department, including those employed for Sarva Siksha Abiyaan. Several workers who were employed in government undertakings had been regularised in the past, he added.
“The strike by the teachers has disturbed the academic environment in schools and affected the students. The ruling AINRC-BJP government should immediately regularise the services of the workers and end their strike. Otherwise, the CPI would organise a major agitation,” he said.
