The CPI(M) extended its full support to the ongoing agitation by electricity meter readers who are demanding continuation of their employment or a provision for alternative livelihood opportunities.
In a statement issued on Wednesday (February 4), CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao said meter readers and bill collectors have been rendering services to power utilities for years in return for meagre and irregular wages. Under the guise of a piece-rate payment system, Discom managements failed to implement minimum wages for these workers. Because of thier long years of service, meter readers hoped of being absorbed by the companies, he said.
The installation of Adani-backed smart meters, however, is threatening the livelihoods of meter readers. The party termed the ongoing agitation as justified, stating that workers are only seeking job security or suitable alternative employment in the wake of technological changes.
He demanded that the Discoms continue the services of all meter readers and related cadre, ensure payment of minimum wages and safeguard their employment rights. It urged the management to take a humane and worker-friendly approach instead of pushing employees into unemployment.
