Educational Testing Service (ETS), the leader in educational assessment and creator of the TOEFL iBT test, on Tuesday hosted a TOEFL experience day event here, offering a preview of the enhanced TOEFL iBT test to be launched on January 21.
The event witnessed experts, advisers and partners explaining the changes, and offered participants an immersive deep dive into the upcoming changes. The focused sessions included the upcoming test enhancements, the educational and fairness principles behind each section, and how the redesigned test better supports today’s learners in a competitive global admissions landscape.
The new format is shorter, spans approximately two hours, features an adaptive testing experience for Reading & Listening sessions, a new 1-6 scoring scale, scores available within 72 hours, and AI-enhanced identity verification for easy check-in, among others.
ETS India currently operates two active test centres in Hyderabad including the Prometric facility. The centres cater to the city’s growing test-taker base. However, considering Hyderabad’s expanding education and study-abroad landscape, ETS India is planning further network expansion by the end of December 2025, its officials said.
Addressing the press, executive director-Global Partnerships & Sales, Sidnei Rodrigues de Souza explained the new features and said the newer format is being welcomed by educators for its expanded preparation resources.
Global General Manager, TOEFL, ETS, Omar Chihane said Hyderabad is a cornerstone market for ETS in southern India, particularly for study-abroad aspirants. The redesigned TOEFL iBT is designed to deliver a fairer, more intuitive, and tailored experience, he added.
According to ETS data, United States (55%) remains the top destination for students from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for studying abroad, followed by Canada (16%), United Kingdom (12%) and Australia (10%).
Most TOEFL test takers, it added, were from Hyderabad (48%) and Vijayawada (18%), followed by Visakhapatnam (16%) and Guntur (10%).
