A day after it was brought to light that faeces was found in a drinking water tank of a government school at Manoor near Palani in Dindigul district, Dindigul Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar on Friday said two 11-year-old boys were behind the act. The officer claimed that they had no malicious intent.

Addressing journalists in Palani, Mr. Jeyakumar said a special team, led by Palani Deputy Superintendent of Police Devaraj, was formed to investigate the incident. The team questioned over 40 persons in connection with the case.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that two 11-year-old boys from the same locality were behind the act. There was no malicious intent and it was done in a playful manner,” he said.

The officer said it was common for boys in the locality (including the two suspects) to play Kabaddi on the school premises.

Faeces was found in the water tank of Manoor Panchayat Union Primary School, located within Keeranur police station limit on October 5, after the quarterly examination break. The headmaster got the water tank cleaned.

The issue was raised during the Parent-Teacher Association and the School Management Committee meeting held at the school on Wednesday.

Enraged by the incident, parents staged a protest and accused the school administration of negligence on student safety. The SP then visited the school and inspected the water tank on the premises.

Acting on a complaint lodged by the headmaster, the Keeranur police registered a case under the provisions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. District education officials also visited the school and held meetings with parents and school authorities.
