The farmers’ grievances redress meeting was conducted by the Tiruppur district administration on Saturday after a gap of over two months.
According to officials, the meeting could not be conducted in October in view of the visit of Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan to Tiruppur. Last month, the district administration could not schedule the monthly meeting as the entire official machinery was in the thick of Special Intensive Revision of draft electoral rolls.
Farmers raised several issues, including water availability for irrigation and livestock management, at the meeting held this month.
A petition submitted by the PAP Vellakovil Branch Canal (Kangayam-Vellakovil) Water Conservation Association flagged the reduction in the supply of water in tail-end areas of the PAP Canal Fourth Zone, in the fifth round.
Despite the large storage in the PAP system dams, the tail-end areas were experiencing dry conditions due to gaps in the management by Water Resources Department, president of the association P. Velusamy said.
A farmer, Appusamy, urged the WRD to ensure filling of 10 tanks under Athikkadavu-Avinashi Project in Senkulam, Thekkalur, Alankadu, and Ettiveerampalayam villages. Farmers losing their crops to peafowl must be adequately compensated, Mr. Appusamy emphasised.
Baladhandayudhapani of Udumalpet sought to know the status of the project for modernisation of Amaravathi Cooperative Sugar Mill. Farmers who have raised sugarcane in over 5,000 acres relying on the modernisation plan are at a crossroads, he said.
